Assessment
Understanding your child's learning and progress
At Euxton Primrose Hill, assessment is an important part of teaching and learning. It helps our teachers understand what children know and can do, celebrate their successes and identify the next steps in their learning.
We use assessment to ensure that every child receives the support, challenge and encouragement they need to make progress and achieve their potential.
Assessment is not simply about tests or scores. Our teachers continually assess children's understanding through questioning, discussion, observation, classwork and other activities, alongside more formal assessments where appropriate.
We use this information to adapt our teaching, identify gaps in knowledge, provide additional support and challenge, and monitor children's progress over time.

📚 Assessment Across the School
Throughout their time at Primrose Hill, children's learning and progress are carefully monitored.
Teachers use a range of assessment approaches to build a clear picture of each child's knowledge, skills and understanding. This helps us to:
- celebrate strengths and achievements
- identify areas where children may need further support
- plan appropriate next steps in learning
- provide additional challenge where appropriate
- identify and address gaps in knowledge
- monitor progress over time.
We recognise that every child is different and that progress does not always look the same for every pupil. Our assessment information helps teachers to understand each child's individual journey and respond to their needs.
🤝 Keeping Parents & Carers Informed
We believe that strong communication between home and school is essential in supporting children's learning and progress.
We provide regular opportunities for parents and carers to discuss how their child is getting on at school.
Autumn Term Parents' Evening
Our autumn parents' evening provides an opportunity to discuss how your child has settled into their new year group, including their learning, friendships, confidence and general wellbeing.
It is also an opportunity to talk about how you can support your child's learning at home.
Spring Term Parents' Evening
Our spring parents' evening provides a more detailed opportunity to discuss your child's academic progress.
Teachers will talk about your child's strengths, areas for development and their next steps in learning.
📄 Termly Reports
We send a termly report home, through Arbor, to parents and carers.
Reports provide an overview of your child's current attainment and progress, together with their attendance information.
💬 We won't wait for parents' evening
If your child's teacher has concerns about their learning, progress, behaviour or wellbeing, we will not wait until the next parents' evening to contact you.
We believe in early communication and working in partnership with families. Where there are concerns, your child's teacher will contact you and, where appropriate, invite you into school to discuss how we can best support your child.
Parents' evenings are an opportunity to talk about your child's progress, but communication between home and school happens throughout the year.
📊 Statutory National Assessments
During their time at primary school, children take part in a number of statutory national assessments.
These assessments provide information about children's attainment and progress and help schools, parents and the wider education system understand how children are performing.
Reception
Reception Baseline Assessment
The Reception Baseline Assessment takes place during the first six weeks of Reception and provides a starting point from which children's progress can be considered.
Early Years Foundation Stage Profile
At the end of Reception, teachers assess children's learning and development against the Early Learning Goals and complete the EYFS Profile.
Year 1
Phonics Screening Check
The Phonics Screening Check takes place in Year 1 and assesses children's ability to apply their phonics knowledge when reading words.
Children who do not meet the expected standard in Year 1 take the check again in Year 2.
Year 4
Multiplication Tables Check
The Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check assesses children's fluency in recalling multiplication facts.
Year 6
Key Stage 2 National Curriculum Assessments
At the end of Year 6, pupils take statutory national curriculum tests in:
- Reading
- Mathematics
- Grammar, punctuation and spelling
Teachers also make statutory teacher assessments in writing and science.
🌱 Supporting Children Through Assessment
We understand that some children may feel anxious about tests and assessments.
We aim to make assessment a positive and purposeful part of learning and help children understand that tests are simply one way of showing what they know and can do.
Our teachers know our children well and provide appropriate support and adjustments where these are required.
Our focus remains on helping every child to learn, make progress and feel proud of their achievements.
📚 Assessment & Your Child
Assessment information is used alongside teachers' knowledge of each child to build a rounded picture of their learning.
We look at what children know, what they can do and what they need to learn next.
Our aim is not simply for children to achieve well in assessments, but to develop the knowledge, skills, confidence and independence they need to succeed throughout their education and beyond.
