PSHE & RSHE

Supporting children to stay safe, healthy, confident and respectful

At Euxton Primrose Hill Primary School, we are committed to providing a high-quality PSHE and RSHE curriculum which supports children's personal development, health, wellbeing, relationships and safety.

Our curriculum is carefully planned, progressively sequenced and age-appropriate. It helps children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to make informed and responsible choices, develop positive relationships, understand themselves and others, and recognise when they may need help or support.

Our PSHE & RSHE Programme

We use the 1Decision programme as a key resource to support the delivery of PSHE and RSHE.

The programme provides engaging and interactive learning experiences, including videos, scenarios, discussion and decision-making activities. We adapt and supplement the programme where necessary to ensure that learning meets the statutory requirements and reflects the needs of our pupils and our school community.

We want our children to develop:

  • positive mental wellbeing, resilience, self-esteem and confidence;
  • healthy, respectful and caring relationships;
  • an understanding of personal safety, boundaries and body autonomy;
  • the ability to recognise risks and know how to seek help;
  • healthy lifestyles and an understanding of physical and emotional changes as they grow;
  • skills in communication, cooperation, conflict resolution and decision-making; and
  • an understanding of their rights, responsibilities and role in the wider community.

What is PSHE?

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) helps children develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive both now and in the future.

Through PSHE, children learn about their wellbeing, relationships, safety, responsibilities, money and their place within their family, school, community and wider society.

What is RSHE?

Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) includes statutory Relationships Education and Health Education.

Relationships Education

Children learn about:

  • families and people who care for them;
  • caring friendships;
  • respectful relationships;
  • relationships online;
  • personal boundaries, privacy and body autonomy;
  • recognising behaviour that is unsafe, harmful or abusive;
  • communicating respectfully and resolving conflict; and
  • how and where to seek help.

Health Education

  • mental wellbeing and emotional health;
  • healthy lifestyles, physical health and fitness;
  • healthy eating and personal hygiene;
  • preventing illness;
  • basic first aid;
  • the risks associated with harmful substances;
  • online safety and wellbeing;

  • how and when to seek help and support.

What will my child learn?

🌱 Reception

Children develop their understanding of themselves and their emotions, friendships, relationships, healthy habits, independence, personal boundaries and keeping themselves safe.

They also learn to identify trusted adults and understand that they can seek help when they are worried, unsafe or unsure.

🌼 Key Stage 1

Children develop their understanding of feelings, friendships, kindness, healthy lifestyles, personal safety, trusted adults and relationships.

🌿 Lower Key Stage 2

Children develop their understanding of positive relationships, managing risks, mental wellbeing, resilience, online safety, healthy lifestyles and changes as they grow.

🌳 Upper Key Stage 2

Children explore healthy relationships, peer influence, personal and online safety, mental health, puberty and physical changes, financial education, responsible decision-making and preparing for transition to secondary school.

These stages reflect the progressive approach set out in your policy, where knowledge and skills are revisited and developed from Reception through to Year 6.

How do we teach PSHE & RSHE?

We provide a safe, supportive and respectful environment in which children can ask questions, share their views and listen to others.

Lessons use a range of approaches, including:

Discussion • Questioning • Videos • Scenarios • Role play • Problem-solving • Decision-making • Reflection

Children are encouraged to think critically, consider different perspectives and make informed decisions. Where sensitive subjects are discussed, teachers use age-appropriate approaches and children are not required to share personal experiences.

Working with Parents & Carers

We recognise parents and carers as the primary educators of their children and value their partnership in supporting children's personal, social, emotional, physical and health development.

We will provide parents and carers with appropriate information about the purpose and content of PSHE and RSHE and opportunities to ask questions or raise concerns.

Information may be shared through the school website, letters, newsletters, parent meetings and curriculum information. Parents and carers can also view the curriculum materials used for RSHE.

Sex Education & the Right to Withdraw

Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory and parents/carers do not have the right to withdraw their child from these areas or from relevant Science teaching.

Sex Education is not compulsory at primary level. Where the school provides Sex Education in addition to statutory Relationships Education, Health Education and Science, parents/carers have the right to request that their child is withdrawn from this provision.

Any request to withdraw should be made to the Headteacher in writing.
