Early Years Foundation Stage

A confident start to school

At Euxton Primrose Hill, we want every child to have thebest possible start to their education.

Our Early Years Foundation Stage provides a nurturing, inclusive and ambitious environment where children feel safe, valued and ready to learn.

We take time to get to know every child as an individual — their interests, experiences, strengths, needs and personality. This begins before children start schoolthrough our transition programme and home visits, helping us to build positive relationships with children and families from the very beginning.

We believe that strong relationships are the foundation for successful learning.

💚 Getting to Know Your Child

Every child arrives at school with their own experiences, interests and strengths.

Before children start Reception, we work hard to build relationships with them and their families. Our transition arrangements and home visits give us an opportunity to begin getting to know each child and understand what is important to them.

This helps us to plan a positive start to school and ensure that children feel known, understood and supported from their very first day.

Once children join us, our staff continue to observe, listen and interact with them carefully so that we can build on what they already know and can do.

📚 Our EYFS Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to give children the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to become confident, independent learners and prepare them for the next stage of their education.

We use Strong Foundations as a starting point for our curriculum planning, ensuring that learning is carefully sequenced and builds progressively throughout the Reception year.

Our curriculum focuses on developing children's:

Communication and language • Personal, social and emotional development • Physical development • Literacy • Mathematics • Understanding the world • Expressive arts and design

We recognise that these areas of learning are interconnected and provide children with opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills through a balance of adult-led teaching, guided learning and child-initiated experiences.

🗣️ Communication & Oracy

Developing children's communication and language is central to our EYFS curriculum.

We create rich opportunities for children to talk, listen, ask questions, share ideas and develop their vocabulary.

Through skilled adult interactions, stories, rhymes, conversations, play and carefully planned learning experiences, we help children develop the communication skills they need to express themselves confidently and understand others.

We recognise that strong communication and language skills provide an important foundation for learning across the curriculum.

📖 Early Reading & Phonics

We want every child to develop a love of reading from the very beginning of their school journey.

Children are taught phonics systematically through Red Rose Letters and Sounds, developing the knowledge and skills they need to become confident early readers.

Alongside phonics teaching, children experience a rich range of stories, rhymes, poems and high-quality children's books.

We read aloud regularly and encourage children to talk about books, characters, events and new vocabulary, helping to develop both their imagination and understanding of language.

🌱 Learning Through Play & Experience

Play is an important part of how young children learn.

Our children have opportunities to explore, investigate, create, imagine, solve problems and practise new skills through carefully planned learning experiences.

Our environment provides opportunities for children to follow their interests while also being supported by adults to develop and deepen their knowledge and understanding.

We encourage children to become increasingly independent, resilient and confident learnersdeveloping the skills they need to approach new experiences with curiosity.

🌳 Our Learning Environment

Our EYFS environment is carefully organised to encourage children to become motivated and independent learners.

Children have access to a wide range of resources and learning opportunities both indoors and outdoors.

Our outdoor provision gives children space to explore, be physically active, develop their social and communication skills and investigate the natural world.

We make the most of our wider school grounds wherever possible, helping children to develop a sense of curiosity and wonder about their environment.

🤝 Inclusive & Ambitious for Every Child

We believe that every child can achieve.

Our experienced EYFS team work closely with families and colleagues across school to identify children's strengths and any areas where additional support may be needed.

Where children have additional needs, we work closely with families and appropriate professionals to ensure that support is identified as early as possible and tailored to each child's individual needs.

We want every child to feel included, valued and able to participate fully in school life.

🏫 Ready for the Next Stage

Our aim is for children to leave Reception as confident, curious and increasingly independent learners, ready to take the next step into Year 1.

Throughout the year, we build the knowledge, skills, vocabulary, confidence and learning behaviours that children need for the next stage of their education.

At the end of Reception, teachers complete the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile, assessing children's learning and development against the Early Learning Goals.

Parents and carers receive a written report summarising their child's progress and development.

🌟 The Primrose Hill EYFS

Our EYFS is built around the belief that knowing the child comes first.

We want children to feel happy, secure and excited about learning, while providing the high expectations, rich experiences and strong foundations they need to thrive.

Every child. Known. Valued. Ready to learn.
