Online Safety

BE “SMART”

Use this button to report online concerns

Our pupils are growing up in a world of ever-changing technology. While technology offers many benefits, we must also be aware of the potential risks. At Primrose Hill Primary School, we are committed to equipping children with the knowledge and skills to navigate the online world safely, in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024.

Through our curriculum, we teach our pupils to:

  • Understand the impact of cyberbullying and know what to do if they experience or witness it.

  • Be vigilant when communicating online, recognising that people may not always be who they claim to be, and to think carefully about what they share.

  • Tell a trusted adult if they see or experience something that makes them feel uncomfortable or upset.

  • Question the reliability of online information and develop critical thinking skills.

  • Search responsibly and safely when using the internet.

We recognise that much of our pupils' internet use happens at home, beyond the protections of school filters. To support families, we have gathered a selection of websites, advice, and resources to help you navigate online safety with your child. We encourage open conversations about online experiences and safe digital habits at home.

Online Safety encompasses Internet Technologies and Electronic Communications such as mobile phones as well as collaboration tools and personal publishing. It highlights the need to educate pupils about the benefits and risks of using technology and provides safeguards and awareness for users to enable them to control their online experience.

Our Online Safety Policy reflects the need to raise awareness of the safety issues associated with electronic communications as a whole. Online Safety depends on effective practice at a number of levels:

  • Responsible Computer use by all staff and students; encouraged by education and made explicit through published policies
  • Sound implementation of Online Safety policy in both administration and curriculum, including secure school network design and use.
  • Safe and secure internet provision.

Primrose Hill Primary School Online Safety Policy

Our Online Safety Policy has been written by the school, building on that proposed by BECTA E-Safety Policy and government guidance. It has been agreed by senior management and approved by Governors.

An Online Safety Coordinator and a named Governor takes responsibility for E-Safety.

Our Online Safety Policy can be viewed on our Policies page and its implementation will be reviewed annually.

What is the Lancashire School Online Safety Charter?

The Lancashire School Online Safety Charter is a self evaluation tool, established for schools in Lancashire to demonstrate their commitment to the ongoing development of Online Safety within their school community. Most schools have already started or are in the process of writing their Online Safety Policy. Many have provided staff and parent Online Safety training sessions and Online Safety is now embedded within the curriculum. Aspects of Online Safety regularly appear in the news and in many cases highlight the negative issues surrounding Online Safety within society. There is a great deal of good practice taking place within Lancashire schools to support Online Safety both within the school and its community.
