Science week – learning about Blood in Elm Class

Mrs Cunningham (Joe’s mum and Roisin’s auntie ) came to talk to us about her very exciting job as a scientist in the hospital. She told us her job was to look at blood and find out about white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets.

It was fascinating to discover how our body fights off infections and we learned how important the white blood cells are . We even watched a video of a white blood cell chasing some bacteria ! We all cheered when it caught the bacteria and began to break it down.

We all had a go and being platelets, to stop the blood escaping from our bodies when we cut ourselves, and also learned that the platelets stop more bacteria for getting in too.

It was a wonderful afternoon and we learned lots – and the teachers did too !
