No Pen Wednesday - Year 6 Everest

Year 6 have had a fabulous day celebrating no pens! We started the morning with Mrs Goodyear’s favourite picture book - The Day the Crayons Quit. After much laughter we decided to have a go at some tongue twisters - they really were quite difficult. Mrs Swinburn shared some images from her time in South Africa, particularly her visit to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
Our main focus and inspiration for the day was the book ‘Young, Black and Gifted’ by Jamia Wilson. We spoke about racial inequality throughout time and key events in history before looking at the different people represented and celebrated across all sectors within the book. The children worked in groups to explore the life of ten influential figures before using our digital media skills to create some mixed media portraits. Finally they sequenced them to create a timeline of history from Rosa Parks leading to Kamala Harris. Well done Year 6 for an amazing day!
