  • Year 5 - investigating upthrust

    Sat 29 Jan 2022

Year 5 were set the challenge - make a ‘boat’ (really a raft), using only one piece of tinfoil, that would allow for the most upthrust and therefore be able to hold the most mass. It proved to be trickier than they thought and their initial ideas tended to be about making it streamlined which did not work. The eventual winner in Olympus was Logan, whose creation held an impressive 140g before sinking. One group in Mont Blanc claimed 160g but that needs to be confirmed! Careful positioning of the plastic masses was needed to ensure even distribution.
The conclusion reached was that the greater the surface area, the greater the amount of upthrust and therefore the more mass could be held.

They each designed their own painting and created it on paper before painting it on the wall. It was very tricky but looks fantastic.

  • Artist visit in Snowdon class

Wed 26 Jan 2022 Mrs Bullock

Snowdon class were very lucky and excited to have an artist come to work with them today. Lucy Wray is a mixed media artist from Euxton who takes inspiration from the natural world and local wildlife. She uses recycled materials to create her amazing creations. Her work links nicely with our study of collage and the techniques used to create it. Lucy gave us lots of  tips and ideas. We worked to create a bird inspired by the techniques she uses. We will go on to incorporate these skills in our own river collages over the next few sessions.  Thank you so much for spending time with us Lucy!

Lucy currently has an exhibition of her work at St Lawerence’s church in Chorley.

  • Superheroes in Snowdon Class

Tue 18 Jan 2022 Mrs Bullock

We have had the second session of our Super Hero dance lessons. We have developed characters to use in our dance. The children were tasked with creating a sequence of moves which showed how the person changed into the character and moves to help our audience discover which superhero  we are dancing as. Good job team, I’m really excited to see how this develops.
